The Hole Beneath the Holiness

This drawing by Michael Bierut which accompanied Slavoj Zizek's article Defenders of the Faith on the New York Times is very interesting. Although being very visual, it has a deep lingual connection to what it is about. I consider the connection more of a phonological than semantic. The title I've given to this post explains it well: The Hole Beneath the Holiness.

Zizek is always interesting. And of course a good example as the example he's pointing out, as he also advocates for some kinda Christian Socialism. However, the credit given to atheists and atheist tradition seems a bit overkill; I doubt if most atheists these days would consider the thoughts of liberal intellectuals in Europe. Rather they're fanatic consumers, and just want Moslems not to interfere with their consumeristic orgy and pursuit of materialistic numbness...
