If the whole existence is mere transformation of matter from one shape to another, then the only thing that matters is our action and participation as individuals in events that direct and modify this transformation.

But are you sure that actions changing matter actually matters? Transformation is inevitable and with entropy, basically the physical move from order towards chaos, any action performed by individuals is merely a desperate act to create order in the chaotic process. If not, that is, the act is to create more chaos, thus speeding up the process.
But hey, isnt it nice that we carry atoms in our body that are millions of years old - how's that for reincarnation.

I do actually think that physical world moves from chaos to chaos. What matters in my eyes is the individuals' anarchic action against chaos-wrapped-in-order of the social life we are entrapped in; borrowing Francis Bacon's term: "ordered chaos." However, within mentally ordered concept of chaos, which is in itself a order-craving projection of human mind upon its object of study, science explains for instance that an individual atom of million years old can still be "alive" in our body. If atoms can remain intact for millions of years, then there is not such a thing as "transformation" of matter fundamentally speaking, only endless variation of temporary combinations of everlasting elements of physical world. Hence there is no chaos and it is all ordered within the very rigid structure of each atom.
Given that, scientist who splits atom in order to influence the "trend" of worldly transformation of matter is in fact seeking order by causing chaos in an ordered structure of the smallest entity of physical world; the physical world that came to become “world”, “physical”, “ordered” or “chaotic” etc. according to our cognitive capacity whose properties themselves are produced of and by the very physical entities commonly know as atoms, chaotic or ordered or whatever.
